This page is for those making the change from any 1.xx version of SARApAid.
There are several things that need to be considered when upgrading for the first time to versions 2.00 or greater from versions 1.xx due to the change from 16-bit to 32-bit programming. They are as follows:
Data File Format
There were changes to the data file format in versions 2.00, 2.20, and 3.00. If your local organization emails SARApAid data files back and forth for proofing, approval, etc. you will need to ensure that everyone upgrades to the same version if anyone does. Data files saved in these or later versions cannot be read by earlier versions.
Default Program Folder Location
In accordance with 32-bit Windows standards, the default folder for SARApAid program installation has been changed to C:\Program Files\APPAIDS. As the default location used to be C:\APPAIDS, this may or may not cause some confusion when you upgrade.
You have several choices to make concerning where to install your upgrade. You can:
a. Thumb your nose at 32-bit Windows standards and install SARApAid 3.xx in the same folder (directory) where the previous version was installed. This will leave nothing to be uninstalled or moved, but you will have to point the Setup program to your original folder (directory) during installation of every upgrade from now on!
You can find/verify the location of your current installation by clicking Start; Find; Files or Folders. When the Find: All Files dialog box appears, type in sarapaid.lic as the file to look for. Click Find Now to start the search. You should eventually see sarapaid.lic listed towards the bottom of the window, and beside it will be the folder (directory) where it is located. This folder should be the location of the currently active installation. Designate this folder when installing versions 2.xx or 3.xx, and you will be finished when the installation has completed. DON'T do any of the additional procedures outlined in par b. and following paragraphs below.
b. If you install version 2.xx or 3.xx in the new default location, you'll need to perform a manual uninstall on the old program if you want to reclaim the disk space taken by it. You'll also need to decide whether you want to move any existing data files, if they were stored in the original SARApAid program location (or sub-directories of it). If you store your data files in a separate directory which isn't the program directory (or a sub directory of the program directory) then you don't have to move anything, as the new version will still read the location of your data files from the ini file and will be able to find them for you.
If you install in this manner, I suggest that you proceed as follows:
Install version 2.xx/3.xx to the new location.
Move your license file to the new location.
Move all of your data files to the new location, if applicable (see discussion above).
AFTER VERIFYING THAT YOUR DATA FILES HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY MOVED...Manually uninstall the earlier version.
Select the new location of your data files by changing the Default Data Location information under the Email & Data Location tab in the Preferences window,
Moving Your License File - if you don't move your license file (which must be located in the same directory with the sarapaid.exe file) your new version 2.xx will run as a DEMO instead of a licensed version.
If you're not completely familiar with Copy and/or Move operations on your computer, you can have a knowledgeable friend assist you or you can follow the steps outlined below:
Do this procedure ONLY AFTER installing version 2.xx or greater on your machine.
Use Windows Explorer to locate (use the Find procedure outlined in par. a above if you need to) the "sarapaid.lic" file.
Highlight the file by clicking on it.
Right click and select Copy.
Highlight the directory where the new installation is (will be C:\Program Files\APPAIDS if you didn't change it).
Right click, and select Paste.
Look in your new (version 2.xx/3.xx) installation directory (with Windows Explorer) and make sure that the sarapaid.lic file shows in the file listing. When you have verified that the .lic file is in the new location:
Select the old location directory again
Click on the sarapaid.lic file
-
Right-click, and select Cut (or Delete).
Moving Data Files - this can by done using Windows Explorer or any other file utility you are familiar with. Find the location of your data files (search for *.SAR files, if necessary) and use Copy and Paste to move them to the new location, if necessary. You can use the procedure outlined above concerning your license file to do this.
When all of the data files have been moved - VERIFY THIS by double-checking to ensure that you have moved all of them to the new directory location - you can delete the .SAR files in the OLD folder/directory. If you are unfamiliar with file operations or uncomfortable doing this operation, get a computer-savvy friend to help you. You don't want to lose your data files!
Manually Uninstalling - Before you attempt this procedure, make sure that the new installation is running correctly by starting SARApAid. The version showing on the Splash (or About) screen should be 3.xx.xxxxx, and your name and version number should also show up. If you see DEMO on the Splash/About screen, then you didn't get your license file moved successfully. Go back and do that before continuing here.
DO NOT perform this procedure unless you installed version 3.xx in a different folder (directory) than your version 1.xx installation!
Use Windows Explorer to highlight the old installation folder (directory). If you've done everything correctly up to now, the only files you should see listed in this folder are sarapaid.exe, sarapaid.hlp, and possibly sarapaid.gid. You can do a final verify that this is your old version by clicking on the sarapaid.exe file, right click, select Properties, and click on the Version tab. The Description: line should show version 1.12, or possibly something earlier. If this is the case, click OK, right-click the sarapaid.exe file again, and select Delete.
Continue to delete the sarapaid.hlp file and the sarapaid.gid file, if it exists, in the same manner. At this point the folder should be empty. Click on the empty APPAIDS folder icon and delete it also.
This procedure may seem lengthy and complicated, but it only needs to be performed the 1st time you upgrade from a 1.xx version. All future upgrades can be handled by merely running the appropriate upgrade program (assuming you continue to install to the same default directory).
New Feature Activation
To activate several new features in versions 2.xx and later, you'll have to go to the Preferences window.
Under the Email & Data Location tab, enter a Default Email Attachment Address for SARApAid data file attachment messages.
Don't forget to change the Default Data Location under the Email & Data Location tab if you moved your data files in conjunction with an installation to a different directory.
Click the desired File Association setting (default is Yes) under the Function tab.
Click Save to exit the Preferences window.
